Deep linking vs. Main Page

I have been doing a great deal of the linking methods to get as many backlinks to my site as I can. Article submissions, blog commenting, forum posting, social bookmarking........

I have a retail site and the overwhelming majority of my section and product pages have very low or no pr at all. Since it is true that more likely buyers are looking at specific or at least more focused keywords when going to google, yahoo does it not make sense to focus on deep linking to my section pages and then my product pages to kind of do an end around my competitors? Most of them are focusing on building links to their main page. While I want traffic, I really want qualified traffic or traffic that is more likely to leave me some money. Is there a best or better method to deep link? Also I have over 5000 pages to potentially deep link to so I think the best method would be to go to my section pages?

    Richromo,

In your scenario, deep linking would be better. At the end of the day what you want are sales. Take your customer s directly to the page where the product is listed. People want quick results, they are always confused about finding the right page. The sooner they find their product, more are the chances of conversion.

    I hope that helps.

Use important keywords and deep links from all the non important pages to the main one which is generating the most sales. I know that's the strategy used by some.

All my pages are linked as are most/all retail sites with the home page link on every page as well as the major section pages. Should I create another link on the non important pages back to the front page with important keywords in addition. With 5K or so non important product pages that is a lot of work. Does the main page links on each product page suffice?

practice both main page and deep linking... remember that google likes to see both when they crawl your pages... something like 50% of backlinks should be to main page and the rest split among other pages..

Yikes! I am further behind than I thought! I have primarily concentrated on back links to my main page and now I know that I need to get major numbers of links to my inner pages! It appears the next six - nine months of my life are full of deep linking! Hi Ho Hi Ho its off to work I go!
