I have read that you should try and deep link as often as possible to build inner page pr, and as a method of getting inner pages listed higher in the serps for pages other than your main page. OK, now I see that you should consider the percentage of deep links vs. main page links as a factor in determining how well you rank in the serps? Is this true, and if so what is the optimal percentage - if there is an optimal percentage - of how many inner pages should be linked to? I recall seeing a graph on google webmaster tools that had a percentage or perhaps just a term such as low, as to the amount of inner pages that had links pointed to these pages. I will stop now and hope for an answer as I am beginning to ramble.
I don't know about the optimal ratio, but for one of sites listed in my sig, links to the home page are roughly 1400 per yahoo and total links (including deep links) are roughly 1800. That site ranks reasonably well for the competitive search terms in its category... so maybe that's useful into to you. The site, BTW, is the S corporations site...
deep link percentage is the number of internal pages which are linked to by highly relevant incoming links from highly relevant established pages.

I haven't heard of this ratio, but my pages that got more PR yesterday are the ones that have links pointing to them from high PR sites. The ones that didn't benefit don't have links to them from other sites.
mainpage : internal pages - 70 : 30 This works nicely for me but I suppose it depends on the size of the site. Obviously having a 10.000+ pages site is not exactly the same as a small niche niche with just a few pages.
I have a lot of work to do as I would estimate that my ration right now is about 95 : 5 and I need to both increase my mainpage and internal page links. Thanks for the input.
Sorry for my ignorance, but are internal links that critical? All the backlinks I have been building are to my homepage.
Internal links are also very important in the sense that not all the information contained in them are detailed on the homepage. You know, a visitor might be searching for such information and not what the homepage offers. It takes time and hard work for one to do it, but it can be done.
You want deep links to your page as much as possible, this really helps in the indexing and ranking of those pages, and not just the home page, if you have done the keyword research for each of your pages then you can be all over the serps for different keywords, instead of just the home page main keywords. Make sure to use those deep link keywords in the anchor text when you build links. ALSO Internal Link building within your site is very important not only for on-site SEO but also to improve your bounce rate. If you need to learn more I have written a very detailed guide to this on my blog, hope it helps: Internal Link Building for On-Site SEO
