I just completed the Deep Link Ratio Calculator. Simply type in a domain name and it returns three estimates of the deep link ratio for that domain. What's the deep link ratio? It is the ratio of deep links to a website to the total links to the website. The higher, the better, in general, because deep links are more targeted. Feedback/comments/questions welcome. Post back here, PM me, or email me using the form at the website
Nice tool - thanks. BTW can you give any indication of what a "high" ratio typically is ? is it 20%, 50% or higher ? Thanks again Brian
Yeah, I would put a "high" value around 70%, but of course, there are a few caveats. Having said that, 50% ain't bad! Take a few examples: Google.com is ~38%, while DigitalPoint.com is 97%. This tells you that most people link to google.com directly, but deep link into DP.com. To me, it's because DP has lots of useful tools that people recommend. Space.com comes out at 90%. To take another example: forums.digitalpoint.com comes out at ~13%. This means that people link to the top domain and not to specific threads. So, to qualify my original answer: how high your DLR "should" be depends on your website. Think about your website and how people should be linking to it, and then figure out if your DLR is high or low. If you have a forum with a DLR of 90%, then your threads are really cool. But if you have a collection of SEO tools and your DLR is 10%, then you've got a problem.
SeBasic Thanks......looks like I have some work to do. Can I push my luck & ask one more question. What is the best tactic to undertake deep linking. Most directories only accept index pages - same with reciprocal linking. So I can only think of (a) Articles with deep link in bio line (b) Buy a few domain names and point them at the inner pages. (c) use a co-op There must be another way ? Thanks in advance Brian
Deep links are generally harder to get than root links. It's about writing interesting content that people want to link to. It's also about writing articles and Press Releases, and rather than linking to the front page of the site, linking to the internal pages... Basically, I go out of my way NOT to link to the index page of my sites - I don't want my users to arrive there... I want them on product pages. The few sites of mine that I tested all see 95%+ deeplinks
Yep, it's all about giving people something to link to: link baiting. If you already have a few tutorials or tools or other "link worthy" pages, consider using social bookmark systems (delicious, digg, etc) to spread the word. Read all About Social Bookmarks - see that's a good deep link there!
Thank you. Glad you like it. If anyone has any suggestions for improvements, please let me know. And feel free to link to it Thanks!
