When people talk about deep link building, how deep are we talking about? ie, is it sufficient to go only as deep as each product category / brand page? or does deep link building mean it has to go right down to the an actual product page itself? confused..
Any link to your site that doesn't link directly to your home page is considered as a "deep link" When your out getting links to your site, you should identify pages that you feel are particularly interesting or will help you rank well as far as SEO goes... Linking directly to your product might help you sometimes, but linking to a particularly powerful page on your site will help you even more in the long run...

Deep link building has many advantages; typically you are going to target long tail keywords on highly targeted category pages. The long tail keywords are less competitive and easier to rank for. Each category page that ranks is a highly targeted landing page that your visitors should love. If your category pages are ranking well this will help boost other pages within your website like related subcategory pages, or you home page. Deep link building can also help produce dual listings in the search results – Having two free spots is always good!!
