Hi everyone, Could really use some advice here. I am thinking of buying a dedicated server, i have seen one, the specs are: Intel P4 2.8 A HDD 80GB RAM 2GB BW 1500GB OS Fedora Core 4 IPs 8 ( 5 usable ) Cpanel+WHM+Fantastico Uplink Port Speed 100Mbps Drive Controller SATA $130 per month. Is this a good deal?
Aside from the specs, you should also investigate the track record of the server provider in terms of network reliability, etc.
Yes, it does look like a nice deal. However, if I was you, I would prefer to go with CentOS instead of Fedora. Fedora seems a little too bleeding edge to consider for deployment.
Yeah its a good deal but as far as I know server4sale provide only basic Management, so if u r starter U must go for fully managed server.. Any ways nice deal.. Regards
Thanks for the feedback guys, i really appreciate it. I also heard that Fedora isn't great compared to Centos, so i changed the server specs to this: Easy Managed - LT - AMD Sempron 2600 A HDD 250GB RAM 2GB BW 1500GB CentOS 4.x Uplink Port : 100Mbps. Cpanel+Fantastico+WHM Price@ $130 per month. Same price, however better OS and HDD and i am getting an outside company to manage the server for me.
I think instead of going for third party OP should opt for a managed dedicated server hosting. Instead of paying for two different companies OP can pay for a single company and it would definitely reduce the cost and there are many hosting provider providing managed dedicated server hosting and there are also some hosting companies providing free server management.
Well, actually I beg to differ. Some web host make be good at offering hosting solutions but may not provide the personalized service required. There are great web hosts which offers unmanaged servers and there are not that great web hosts offering managed servers. By getting a great unmanaged servers with a great 3rd party management service, it will help get the best of both worlds.
Yep, you are right and this solution is quite costly. Why do yo think that a great web hosts can't offer great services like third party management?
I am not saying that great web hosts cannot offer great services. There are those who can but they can be relatively more costly such as rackspace.com. I had servers at The Planet and I have to say that network wise and hardware offering, they were pretty good with a great price to boot but getting support from them could takes several hours to 12 hours before you get something done. At which time, I hired a 3rd party which actually cost much less than the managed service offered by The Planet and was a lot more responsive. Web hosts may already be stretched as far as support because they not only have to ensure that the network and the datacenters are up, they have to ensure that the server rans flawlessly hardware-wise and that can already be already a handful of work. They seems often times stretched because they need to offer managed services to all their servers. 3rd party management service providers usually do not have datacenters to run and they just concentrate on managing servers. They probably would not be stretch to handle tens of thousands of customers or servers but just handle a smaller number of machines. The one I used was always there to guide me through getting things done for me, pretty much patiently spoonfeeding me with the service they provide. That's just my experience. I am not here to state that you cannot provide a good managed service while offering servers plan. Don't get me wrong here.
Rackspace and The Planet may be more costly and getting support from them could take several hours. But apart from both of them there are still millions of hosting provider providing managed hosting services and getting support from them may not take several hours. A quick search in google would definitely help to find such managed hosting providers providing better support and services at a competitive price. In our case we offer fully managed dedicated servers as we have have separate support staff for management of the servers and separate support staff to look after the issues pertaining to data centre. So, you can expect the same level of support and responsiveness that you might get from a third party management services.
