Dedicated Server Question - DNS issue..

I'm sort of a newbie at this dedicated server thing. I recently just got one, and in my account email, they sent me TWO separate ips........one for the server itself and the second is the domain ip.

I've worked with Virtual dedicated servers before, and what I normally do when it comes to the DNS nameservers is.......I just update the domain I'm trying to use as my name server with my ip address(normally u're provided with 1 ip with a VPS server)....then I could point all my domains to that nameserver.......

But now with a dedicated server (I'm provided with 2 different ips), and I seem to be doing something wrong, I'm not sure what it is....My main question really is, "Which ip should I use for the dns nameserver? The servers ip? or the ip for the domains?

You should be using both the ip addresses for your name servers, not just the one.

usually something like ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com, the idea is suppose to be if one goes down, the other is still up, but when your running both of them off the same server it negates the idea :( /

If that doesn't help, shoot off an email to your provider asking them what you should do, normally that are very helpful.

Yes, you need to use the server's IP to setup the nameservers. Do you have any control panels installed on the server, say Cpanel?

Ok. You could configure nameservers via WHM >> nameservers and assign the IPs to the corresponding nameservers, which should help you. You can contact me via PM or messenger so that I could guide you if you have any more questions.

You can also assign name servers by using SSH, just follow the steps
login to your SSH as root
    pico /etc/nameserverips
change it and save it, but I still feel WHM is the best option as you are beginner.
