dedicated server opinions

i posted this over at the warrior and got some good answers but i wanted to check with my two favorites not just one.

heres the situation.... i came up with a half cocked probably stupid business idea today. one of those just hits ya kind of moments. and i will admit its way off track from my normal stuff online.
so naturally i have to try it. maybe its just to keep things interesting i guess :)

so i need any opinions i can get from you folks. i need a dedicated server for this plan but since it is a crack pot idea im not looking to go with kiosk or anything like that.
im looking for a linux dedicated with a company for cheap. i know that you get what you pay for but im looking for a needle in the hay here i guess.

up time is important and so are total allowances. bandwith etc. but i guess it doesnt have to be the most high end lightning fast thing in the world.
economy is what im getting at.
anyone with a recommendation or even a warning about who to go with or stay away from please drop you ideas on me.
    thanks-joel

1/2 an hour is too short a time to get responses because it is the weekend and those in the know may be asleep or away.

In any case, if it is a testing platform which you do not want to invest too much in it, maybe getting a VPS account would be a good testbed. Once you get in enough traffic and income, you can move to a dedicated server.

thanks eddy for the input but i know that a virtual wont work for what im thinking. it needs to be a dedicated it just doesnt need to be a high end one. really just looking for reco's or avoids if anyone has them.

I'll not point out any specific host on this one but I will give you some tips when shopping around.

Try and do business directly with a host that owns a data centre or a reseller who is collocated and has direct access to their servers 24/7. No point in doing business with a reseller who is reselling from another reseller. Cut out all the middle men if possible as it can end up a pain when needing good support.

If uptime & power is important then you need to ask as much questions as possible such as what PDU's are being used, is there redundancy power set-up in cabinets, generator for the building and how many carriers are feeding the data centre. If they cant answer these simple questions, stay away.

Anyone who offers you unlimited bandwidth is talking through their arse. There is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth, even for Data Centres. carriers charge big money for bandwidth so Data Centres need to charge their customers for it. Unlimited bandwidth is an over sell, sellers are assuming you wont even use that much bandwidth so they can afford to over sell it.

agree with cormac, get medium vps that support upgrade packet to dedicated server, the lowest downtime offer is the best :)

I've had cheap dedicated hosts, and I have had good ones... Not top of the line you can run Amazon.com off of it host, but 2 gigs ram, etc, etc... What I'm on now. And it is worth every penny.

I've been hosting growing domains for over 6 years now. mcarterbrown.com is mine, and it's been through quite a few incarnations. Everything from a custom coding site, to now a dedicated paintball forums.

Anyhow... I've come to the conclusion that softlayer is the best for everything I need.

    softlayer.com

They are NOT the cheapest, but they offer some of the best at reasonable prices. Lots of ram, bandwidth, space... and great service when needed.

I've tried aplus.net... didn't like them at all.

Did the dreamhost.com virtual stuff... Great and cheap for throwaway sites, and test sites. I still use them for junk sites that need bandwidth for downloading, but not server processor intensive.

The CHEAPEST dedicated servers you'll find are at: serverpronto.com

If you're just going to test it out, etc, etc... you can't go wrong there I feel. Note that the RAM is very low, so it depends on how server intensive your scripts are going to be.... But it's great for testing, and probably exactly what you need to start.

Then move it to something like softlayer once you are off the ground.

    Anyhow.. I hope that helps.

Edit: Something about not posting live links... hmmm... OK, let me see if this works.

You can easily get P4 HT, 1GB RAM with 1TB+ traffic under $100.

If you build your own computer you can just put it at a colo and it will be fast and yours. I use a local place, about 5 miles from where I am and they are great. It cost $50 bucks a month, and then I run virtualmin which is like 100 a year.

How much was it to make the server? I know someone who charges about £150 each server, for 2.0ghz, 1gig ram 160gig HD.

Buy dedicated servers from companies dedicated to that field. Forget the hosting companies that deal with shared hosting and resell dedicated servers.

Try with theplanet.com ev1servers.com sagonet.com thei have good and cheap dedi servers. And the advantage is that you will deal directly with your provider, no need to keep the "reseller" between you and the problem.
