I am planning of getting a dedicate server so I have few question before buying. Any help is greatly appreciate :)

1.How do I get my goDaddy Domain to point at my new dedicate server IP?
Is it just like how I would normally do? - Manage Nameserver - and instead of putting ns1.myhost.com I would put the IP in place of it?

2.Do dedicate server come with ready to go FTP server? or we have to install it?

3.I saw few post about people install firewall or virus protection to their dedicate server, why do you have to install those thing? Like virus protection, can a server get virus from php file or anonymous injection?

4.After I purchased and the set up is done, Am I good to go or I still have to install few more stuff before the site can get online?

Oh, just to assist everyone on helping me answer the question, I am planning to use Dedicate server just to run my site so its not for hosting or downloading purpose.

    Thank guys

I can only help you with number 1. Godaddy has made this a bit more complicated than it used to be.

    At godaddy:
login, click on my domains and
select the domain that will be your nameserver by clicking on the name
At the bottom left corner of the page when you scroll
Find Host Summary (add) and click on add.
On the page that appears enter ns1 into the box labeled host name
and your assigned IP number into the host ip1 box
Click okay and then repeat the process for ns2
Now you go back and change the names servers for the domain to
ns1.youdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com and click okay.

    1) First you need to set up a nameserver on your dedicated server or use a 3rd party's namaserver to bind your website URL to your server's IP. Then change the NS records for your domain from Godaddy's interface to the nameservers that contain the record of your domain.

    2) Not all of them, depends on the OS setup. But installation is easy. For exampla in Debian family linux you can install it with "apt-get".

    3) Yu better have firewall installed. That will block all incoming connections to the ports that you are not going to use on the server. Firewall basically closes those ports. Use a strong root password and don't give roon privileges to any of the server users, and you will be 99% guaranteed free of viruses.

    4) You can never let a server go. You need at leat to monitor it occasionally. But of course, the freshly-purchased server needs some setup work involved. Just like a fresh installation of Windows on your PC - you need to install and setup the applications that need to be used on the server.

You must understand that there are hundreds of various purposes for the use of a server. So virtually no server can be initially setup for all possible purposes by your hosting provider. I hope you understand what i mean.
