There are lots of things you can do (depends on your site really) to get people to stay on the site for longer -

BIGGEST thing: make content more engaging! :)

The bounce rate is a highly overvalued metric for some people. Would you rather have a 90% bounce rate on 100,000 visitors or a 5% bounce rate on 1,000 visitors?

One thing you can do is make sure you have relevant content in order to keep users on your site for longer and you must give them options in order to visit more then one page on your site.

Just look at your site from the perspective of a visitor, would you want to stay on that page?/site? what would make it more engaging?/likely for you to stay there longer?

i leave the site if I think it contains to much spams, too much links, to much flash. If the site is simple, easy to read, easy to move around, i will stay a little longer.

It's hard to really give a solution without more information really. The question how to decrease bounce rate is so broad. What information do you have about your visitors

    1. How are you trying to convert? Are you selling a product? Are you trying to sign people up?

    2. How long are visitors staying? Are they staying a while? Maybe your call to action isn't obvious or too confusing or not appealing.

Are they bouncing after a few seconds? Is your web site design awful?

    3. How easy is your navigation? Maybe it's confusing and visitors don't know where to go?

    4. Are you in a competitive market? If so have you got an good offers, special deals, free shipping etc. Give them a reason to want to give you their business instead of using your competitors.

So use the information you have got to narrow down possible problems with your site

Bounce rate, in a nutshell is like an assorted peanut treat. There are a lot of interpretations with regards to Bounce rate and thus decreasing or increasing bounce rate can both have negative and positive effects.

I have strange experiences that I can't really explain...my site has 40% exit rate, but who stay stays for 25-30 minutes. They come from the same search...why then?

You can reduce a bounce rate by using fresh and natural content on our website which is more attractive as well as interesting to hear so that the user can take interest in it.

But how can I add service to an anonymous e-mail service? I can't write a blog, it's pointless..

The simple answer is put less content on one page, force visitors to click links to read articles in their entirety.

Bounce rate, can be reduced by having the appropriate content which a user needs. Do not try to keep more content and explain user in points.

You can write off small paragraphs, so as the user will not go tizzy and write a content which makes him feel good and reliable.

Also, @ Jobert, do agree with your inputs too. thanks :)
