decent traffic, crappy money

actually, I'm kind of a beginner in this game still, so I don't really even know how decent the traffic is. in january, I got about 20,000 uniques and about 160,000 page loads. Currently, I'm getting 1000-2000 uniques per day. the site made me roughly $100 (which is slightly less than the dedicated server fees). Without going into too many details, I'll just say the the site is of an adult nature, is free, and is not porn.

could I be making more money with the traffic I'm getting, or do I just need to get more traffic?

 

How are you adverising to get that many hits per day, as that is quite a nice number of visits.

 

It would help to know the URL and how you are currently monetizing it. That amount sounds low for the number of visits you are getting but it really depends on the quality/relevance of the traffic and what you are using to earn money.

 

ok, the site is http://splexy.com. it's an adult social network. I'm not really entirely sure how to best monetize it. I could advertise porn sites, but that might scare off the women, and I want everyone to be comfortable. how I'm advertising is kind of secret, but its effective enough that my users average 10 page views per unique. a lot of the traffic is international.

 

Are you sure you're getting 1000-2000 unique visitors per day? No pagerank, low Alexa rating, forum is empty, site just doesn't really look that populated for so many visitors. What forms of marketing did you use to achieve this kind of traffic?

 

There are a lot of factors to think about. Here's a couple to get you started:

1. What kind of traffic is it? Is it search traffic (good)? or is it social bookmark traffic (bad)? Or some other form of traffic?

2. What kind of website is it? What is it about? Some subjects are very hard to monetize. Some types of sites are hard to monetize. I have sites that get about 50 visitors a day that make me about 100$ on average (per day) and I have other sites that get over $1000 visitors a day and make me virtually nothing.

 

This sort of site is hard to monetize. But my first inclination would be to try adult dating sites such as Adult Friend Finder. Have you tried that yet?

 

its a recent change, so it wouldn't show up in google or alexa yet. the site has about 2000 members, and a decent percentage of them are active. just no one likes using the forum.

 

there are actually some fling ads, but there not very visible. I could definitely try harder with them. the "cams" menu link is actually a link to an affiliate webcam site, which is where its making most of its money currently.

so do you think I'll just need thousands more visitors before it really starts bringing in money?

 

I've had a lot more success with AFF than with webcams myself on such sites.

But yes, I think you'll probably need a *lot* of visitors to make a lot of money with this kind of site. Although there may be some tricky things you can do to monetize it... I'm not sure if I want to give away all my secrets at the moment

 

If you get 1000-2000 unique visitors per day and you only have 2,000 members thats a very poor conversion rate (unless your website is under a week old).

Something tells me the traffic you're getting is very poorly targeted. What marketing methods do you use?

 

I don't see any ads in the header and that is the best place to get clicks, so start there.

Well, I got upsetting news for you. I think your toasted. I ran a PHPFOX scripted site and came up with the conclusion that people just don't click on the ads enough.

I seriously pulled as much as 4,000 visitors a day and made less than $1. And becuase it's this type of site it takes a lot of space and keeps doubling.

I'm afraid you may be in trouble with trying to profit from the site. You should just try to keep your head above water by it being able to pay off your server.

I wouldn't worry about scaring away your female visitors by porn ads. Have you checked your gallery yet? There is like a million penis' there. It was actually kind of scary.

 

well you caught me. its phpfox alright. still, I don't see why that should make a difference. I'm making more than a dollar a day now, I just feel like it could be making more.

 

1$/day sounds a little low... well its adult though, Not exactly adsense niched to car insurance
