Hi, I am looking into dedicated servers, but I am not sure what is a better choice Debian or Ubuntu Server. I am willing to learn a lot but for now I am a linux n00b (well not complete noob but not pro by a long shot). Anyways I am looking for advantages/disadvantages for both of them. I am not considering Fedora because I like dpkg. Thanks nolag
ubuntu is debian base lolz. the best choice would be redhat of course. fedora is a derivative of redhat. but then centos works just as redhat will. and centos is free
I know that Ubuntu is debian based, that does not help me choose one...I like dpkg so RedHat (paid for) is out and so is Fedora and CentOs. I am mainly looking into the two options but I don't know what is better.
Ok thank you all, but are there reasons? Cent OS is out of the question for me, and those I am working with. What makes Debian/Ubuntu better? I know a lot of people use both but no one has listed any advantages . Thanks for all your opinions though .
It´s different for each person... I would use debian over ubuntu any day of the week.. Advantages.. Not sure.. But would imagine that debian gives you more control since ubuntu was made to have more prebuilt packages in the installation (since they wanted it to be easier to use than debian)
If your want to learn linux its better to start with Ubuntu and its more flexible/easier in setting up your dedicated server. The community base is really big for ubuntu and i would not recommend to use debian as a _first_ linux distro. Dont go graphical on your linux system, because you'll not learn faster how the system works underneath..
If it a choice between the two pick debian but I would advise fedora over any OS, If you wanted a really secure server go for BSD, its not easy to configure but once it is configured its awesome
If you want Debian then go with Debian - no problem at all. Just have unmanaged dedicated server solution and install there whatever you need or want. I think that is not forbidden at all.
Yes First debian -> Ubuntu If you really need to use a control panel then go for centos which is stable and perfect for hosting.
