Death of IE6

Well, you probably heard a few weeks ago that Google will not support IE6 anymore. The other day, YouTube (as a standalone site) officially announced that they would remove all IE6 hacks from their service.

What do you think? Will IE6 now become history?

Sure, but Msft is talking about IE9 now, so who cares about 6? ;)

I hope that we don't see or hear from IE 6 ever again.
It makes job so much harder to web designers.
Killing IE6 would be merciful thing to do. :D

I used to love IE6, then, when I found Mozilla, I hated it and moved on, and then, when I found Chrome, I decided. again, it was time to move on.

My site stat shows that almost 7% of the users are still using IE 6. However IE browsers are still the favorite. IE 8 leads the tally with 25%. This might be because most computers, especially the windows, have their default browser as IE. Few bother for a change. I personally feel that Chrome is the best among the lot. Light and fast.

I think the problem is still that many large organisations still use it because their proprietary intranets and web software will only work in IE6. If social timewaster sites like YouTube and Facebook stop supporting it, it only makes it more attractive for these organisations because it means their employees can't goof off at work.

Still, at least for most normal web development work I don't think IE6 needs to be a top priority anymore. At worst, most developers should just make sure the site is functional in IE6 even if it doesn't look pretty. So long as users can access the content, then that's as far as you should normally need to go these days. Most domestic users have probably upgraded without even knowing it by now.

well it's the imminent death..it was the best when it was introduced...now its time to move on.....Google has already stopped support for IE6....but its the built in default browser for XP..and we know several guys use XP....so its gonna take a little time...before IE6 completely disappears....

No. People are so afraid of change it is not even funny. The reason IE6 even survives is that there are a gazillion people out there running some old version of Win XP on an equally old PC. People are not out spending money on new computers right now. And half of those are pirated copies. So Microsoft updates are not going to fix the issue. People who pirate software don't get updates (if they are smart).

I think SP2 users must upgrade their browsers to IE8. Because these days only SP2 users are still using IE6 version

Don't confuse "favored" with "used". Just because people use IE doesn't mean it's their favorite. They just don't know any better.
Next week, all European users will be offered a popup ballot box offering them the choice of 7 different browsers. Hopefully most will change or, at least, make discoveries on their own.

It will still exist though right, they're just removing support for it?
