Dear Designers

Graphic design is a very large field. What I'm about to say may offend people, so if you're easily offended or ignorant, please just go back to offering professional services for a dollar.

Professionals in this field yield clients who pay four and five figure dollar amounts for logo designs. Corporate Identity is a very valuable area to design in. Can I please make a whole hearted request of you all and ask you to STOP offering 'professional' design services for a single digit number? Every time I read 'professional' this or that for some design related service, and a price of $7 or $5 - it makes me sick. Do you see Architects offering to design a building for $5? No, because the work is worth more than that.

Please, just because you pirated Photoshop or Illustrator and can put a stroke and a gradient on a font, it doesn't mean you're a professional. This is an increasingly annoying aspect of this forum it seems, where everyone really thinks they're a professional yet it's THEM throwing themselves at potential suitors for a $10 job or entering a contest with a $20 prize pool. If you're working for that kind of money, you're not professional anything. You're just another person on a free forum trying to make a couple dollars for something you threw together.

Please be realistic when you offer your services and stop telling people you're a pro who works for less than what a teenager makes at Mcdonalds in a day. It's really, really disappointing to see how many people flock to 'design' when in reality they're using an illegally acquired software who's full usage they do not even understand 5% of.

Employers and purchasers, please screen workers better. I know not everyone has a massive budget, but shopping around for $10 work will probably only yield you $10 additional for whatever business you're looking for. A logo represents your company or services' image to your customer base; so consider the fact that you mostly get what you pay for.

For those who are 'working' for peanuts - spare me the hate comments. If you have a problem with what I'm saying, responding to try to bash me or 'put me in my place' essentially identifies you as the exact type of person I'm talking about. I'd rather ZERO responses than 1000 people who have never been paid a three or four digit sum for their services all crying in harmony.

    Thanks.

Please also note, I'm aware that some things are worth more than others. I myself provide ecover and banner services for extremely low rates; I do that however because these things are an extremely easy task to perform. Things like logo design however, require much consideration, business research and concept revision. All I ask is for people to stop using the term 'professional' so loosely, with hopes of impressing some would-be client who's looking for the cheapest worker and not the most professional.

i agree but i support more the idea of scalling. you are a cloth designer say, instead of doing work for 1 client, create something great and sell it to 1k clients. you are a building enginer, build your own company to massivly build many buildings, etc. you are web developer, instead of working for 1 client, create a software and sell it to several thousands. but that's why people here accept work for $10, it's because they are freelancing and in freelancing the business sense is limited. in a real life company you have marketing specialists and web developers, where each one does their job and together they form a profitable business.

I like designers who know how to design and do not try to offer business advice. You come off as sanctimonious. Why would I entrust "business research" to my designer? What qualifies you for that role?

So these are the steps you laid out that make logos the province of "professionals" like you and not mere designers who do easy things like ebook cover and banners:

    1. Much consideration
    2. Business research
    3. Concept revision

Do you really think that highly of yourself, that "consideration" and "revisions" are something you think most of the people here offering design services don't do? What a joke this thread is. If you think something is so important for a logo, why would you dismiss it and not put that same importance into an ebook cover?

    This part is just funny:

Isn't this your submission of a $10 logo just 7 days ago?

The simple point is that price is not the way to determine professionalism. People may charge various prices for many reasons not the least of which is that this a forum with many International members.

I have noting against you and you may very well do great work. But don't get all pissy when you start a thread to call out other designers for charging low prices and someone points out the multitude of errors in both your logic and post.

As for your insulting pm, as a courtesy to you, I wont post it and reply in kind. Just worry about your own work and don't try to call other people out for charging a low rate.

First I'd like to say great thread to get going.

I wouldn't call myself an expert in logo design and web design since I'm still a student. The meaning of professional is indeed being overused, but a thread like this won't be able to stop people doing it.
But I'd like to ask you guys, what do you think it takes to be an expert in graphical designs?

Some people might think they're an expert because they know all the tools of a single software, others may think they're an expert because they have some sort of education that relates to this.
What I'm saying is that there's not really any terms defining an expert, are there?

I probably won't consider myself an expert when I'm done with my education either. I still lack the experiences of how to do business and how it's all going on in "the real world".

When people are offering low fee work I guess it's because they don't put much work in it either. As a business you should already know that when you get a logo work for 10$ it's not professional. If the business don't already know that, then the business is not professional either, and you should consider why even bother offering them a professional solution?
Also I assume that professional businesses won't main prior the price when they want to get a logo design but the earlier work designer have made.

I understand where you are coming from but it is rather pointless to address this situation. Its up to whoever is purchasing the graphics to decide whether their "cheap" designer is "professional" or not. No one is forcing anyone or implying anything they can't prove with showing their portfolio off. It can be more lucrative to do a lot of smaller jobs for less money, than wait around for days at a time to land a $xxx job.

If you choose not to do such work for that price than don't. But it shouldn't matter to you that other people are. After all, if they are getting paid, they technically are a professional...

Dear Apple , if you would have ever been payed a 4 figure sum you wouldn't stand here whining . As for the wave of cheap , cheap , cheap abomination makers they get treated like what they're what they're worth 5 dollars .

    Signed ,

P.S. Next time you try to negative rep me know that the only thing you can give me is grey rep
