DDR3 1.5v vs 1.8v

    Hey guys,

This is for the hardware junkies on DP. I'm going to upgrade my computer to intel core quad. The motherboard I'm getting supports DDR3-1333 with recommended speed of 1.5v but it can increase the volts.

I want to spend some money and get the fastest components so I don't have to worry upgrading in the near future.

I mainly use my computer for encoding videos, video editing, and developing. I'm just curious if 1.8v will make any different compared to 1.5v since DDR-1333 is already fast. I'm not planning on overclocking it at all but would be nice to be able to in the future if I wanted.

There is no such thing as a "recommended speed of 1.5v". That is the operating voltage. I don't pay any attention to overclocking but I know some play with voltage levels to help with that but, off the top of my head, it doesn't make sense to me. (I'm an electronic engineer that used to design computer systems at the chip level.) I won't get into the technical reasoning behind that thinking though.

Why do you think 1.8v would futureproof your system? Is DDR going to 1.8V in the near future? Or are you simply misunderstanding what part voltage plays with speed?
