    ddosprotection consist of tens if not hundreds of Ciscos+many other brands,you can dif hosting forums for more info

    I remember reading an article that talked about groups that would launch DDoS attacks on commercial sites that depended on uptime. The group would then contact the site owner demanding money to call the attack off. Has anyone ever had that happen before?

    Yes many websites did faced it and thats not something new,it does exist for years
    Hopefuly one day a legal action will be taken against those groups

    There are only two things you can do.

    1. Wait it out
    2. Contact your upscale provider and have them put in a blackhole filter

    Both are pretty equally effective.
