DDos attack to sell services?

I don't know if I'm getting paranoid. For the first time since we are online, we got hit by a DDos attack that made our services unusable for 2 hours.

The next day, I'm being contacted by a company I won't name to sell (among other things) DDos protection services. This is a very big company, with great reputation. Still, it looks sooo weird (and convenient) to me!

Did this happen to some of you? Am I just paranoid?

That's just like the rumour about antivirus companies writing their own viruses :)

Give the names and lets see how big they are.

It could have been an affiliate selling products FOR them and not necessarily the company themselves.

For example I signup for Symantec Affiliate program. I DDoS a bunch of victims.

I have their email addresses then hit them with Norton Ad with my affiliate link.

Agreed, I wouldn't think a large corporation would threaten it' name like that. And the probably only focus on 1 website.

It was not an affiliate, I was called by a sales representative. And it's a company leader in its field. That's the only thing that tells me it must be a coincidence. But that was scary. And I must say having that DDoS attack right before his call is helping quite a lot to sell his services.

Take care mate, i would do same having a tones of "zombie" pc and DDoS your server to after what offering a "protection" asking for server info and installing some rootkit and backdoor etc ...

lookup on google for "zombie pc" if you dont know about it or "botnet"

Best solution, monitore your network activity and implement firewall rules bloking unsolicited traffic, they allway attack using one kind of attack or many depending their power.

I would positively say that its gotta be that person or service provider who ddosed your site.
Cos its too much of a co-incidence !!

This sounds like someone trying to discredit the company in question that has big reputation.

There is a good dozen of companies nowadays that are among the best providers of services mitigating ddos attacks.

One could say that they are now trying to rearrange the market. Each one is trying to get a particular share from the ddos market.

If that is the case and my assumptions turn out to be correct than this would be another proof of how dirty this business sometimes could be.
