My site uses db.php to connect to my database, I wanted to check my settings, but when I downloaded the db.php file and tried opening it, I got a surprise!

    It said "Hacking Attempt"

So I tried opening with Dreamweaver and got the same result.

    Any suggestions?

When I opened the file in notebook, it opened and it looked like someone had just typed hacking attempt into it instead of it containing the data that my site uses.

Run your antivirus sofware and Check if the file is virus free.

This may sound like a silly question, but are you actually downloading the file instead of trying to just open it? "Hacking Attempt" could be text that is displayed when the file is called.

If you are using cutomer script then db.php might be encrypted. Search on Google to know more source code encyption.

There are variety of encryptors available e.g. ioncube, sourceguardian.
