Hello, I have my own box, (P4 3.4ghz, 1gb ram) that I would like to run as a server. The problem is, I'll need to house it at a datacenter or something because Verizon blocks port 80 and several others. My question is as follows: How does a datacenter work? I've heard of other people bringing servers to datacenters.. but I've never actually done it. What is the process behind it? Do I just call one up, arrange for services, and then drop off my server? (Sorry, I'm kinda new at this)
Although collocation can be the cheaper option it can be also the most painful. If your server has a fault then you need to got to the data centre and fix the problem, even for a reboot. Some data centres will provide a suppport package but usually at a high rate, you can also purchase a remote PDU reboot in some places.
And normal tower boxes arent allowed in a DC. Rack server chasis is needed! Better lease a dedi box...they are quite cheap these days.
