Dashes in domain name

Let say that I found a highly searched .com, one word domain but with dashes, for example: d-esktop.com, m-usic.com, v-ideo.com

    1. How Google will treat and rank the domain?
    2. Domains with dashes ranks well or not?

I agree with 1812, having hyphens in the domain name is not a problem but not in the middle of the words.
There are many domains that are on the top of the search engines and have hyphens.

    Agreed.

    1. Google will treat and rank the domain like any other meaningless names. v-ideo.com is not unlike t-asdf.com.
    2. Google ranks domain names with hyphens just fine.

Google treats hyphens like word separators.

Desk-top.com and music-video.com means something and Google will recognize them as meaningful words. But not m-usic.com or v-ideo.com.
Meaningful domains with hyphens can rank well depending on SEO of website, etc.

I suppose that the majority of webmasters prefer to avoid dashes within their domain names.

I agree with this. Domain names without hyphens means better familiarization for internet surfers and clients.

personally i really dont like any domains with dashes or anything else in there url. First of all...and most importantly its much more difficult for your customer to remembers it and secondly.,.....have you really seen so many domains wth dash to rank in the 1st place? maybe it will rank in 1st page in keywords that there isnt much competition but i am really sceptical whether they are really ranking high in competitive terms.

The hyphens aren't too bad between words, but in the middle of words will hurt you, especially with word of mouth marketing. It would be hard to tell someone that your website is d-esktop.com

As everyone has already stated, hyphens are great in-between words but in the middle of them causes problems.

Google treats and ranks all domains same let if domain has hypens or without hypens. But the most important is that the domain must have a keyword :)

don't go for that , you will regret. I understand that keywords is important but with they dashes , it may cause you bring another meaning and Google Search Analyse it in different way which may cause you lost the SEO on the keywords you want.

In the examples you listed, Google will interpret your domain name as having the keywords "m" and "usic", "d" and "esktop", "v" and "ideo". If the end-result was something coherent (like ex-change, which would read "ex" and "change"), it could still be moderately useful, though.

The absolute only reason to own a hyphen domain is if it's of a high quality search term with the hyphen(s) separating the words. In those cases, it can still get high in search engines to make up for the loss in type-ins and user appeal. There's absolutely no reason otherwise to get a hyphen domain, and ones like v-ideo.com just look like complete crap. Domains are your chance to make a good first impression...ones like that make a bad first impression.

Have split tested some of my sites with hyphens between words and those without. Those without do better in google for some reason.

Try to avoid dashes altogether, it does not seem intimate for viewers at all, unless you're just trying to drive one-time traffic/SEO.
