It actually directly relates to the topic of the site! If it is a gaming site, an adult site, a secrets site, some fashion apparel site or a photographic sites... I'd use dark colours for my clients .. since they tend to give out a different kind of glow to the images!

For sites with a bubbly topic or a more serious note ... Personal sites .... Portfolio sites ... Business sites ... I'd use gradience ....

I've always had the thing for dark sites, but in some ocassions, white sites are also very good looking for me.

It usually depends on the topic of the site.

As long as it's not hard to read, I'm happy.

Dark styles are nice.. but when I design them I usually end up getting sick of the colors as they end up being too bland. Light styles never do this to me, and they are more compatible monitor-wise.

It usually depends upon the type of the site and the target audience, for teen and young target audience sites I think dark templates work well, while for a mature age group audience light colored templates are more suitable.

Id say that web2.0 is now light and dark.

    check out snook.ca/jonathan/

its dark, but there is a toggle on the left to make it light.

I generally prefer a light background, because I've seen dark done badly so often, and light is usually more readable. In theory it is possible to do either shade really well or badly. But I've seen far more dark backgrounds on sites, coupled with darkish text, so that the site ends up totally illegible.

Also, a little colour can go a long way, and that is true of black as much as anything. Check out the Abarcy directory in my sig, which is one of the few examples of me using a dark design. I also used a lot of green around the border in order to soften the effect, which I hope works well. Comments are welcome.

With a dark design you definitely have to go to extra lengths to ensure that the text is legible, and that the dark colour doesn't overwhelm the design and crush the atmosphere you are trying to create.

I prefer a dark theme unless it is a nicely done light theme.

    Hi!

Don't think about design like that! :)

It is totally dependent upon the subject matter of the site.
