Not sure if this is the right question to ask right here, but since all of you bloggers are right here, and Wordpress seems to be the blog platform of choice for many of you, I thought I'd download it. So, now I've got it in a file on my laptop, which is now open, it's got a whole bundle of folders in there, the first one is: wp-admin in the top left hand corner - what the dickens do I do next? How do I set up my first ever blog, from scratch, what do I click on where please to get started? I've got my own domain - Blogoblin.com - I've got a host for 12 months, how on earth do I make all of this come together? Is there a very simple tutorial I can follow somewhere online that takes one, right through all the basics that all of you take for granted? This is terrifying. Any assistance from you kind and helpful people would be highly appreciated. Many thanks! Mark PS Whatever you do, don't go all technical jargon on me, I'm too old to be taking all of this on board!
Well here is the link to the famous 5 minute install (found to have been even less ) http://wordpress.org/docs/installation/5-minute/ Hmm On Reading it it doesn't seem to technical it really depends on your level of noobness lol! If you come a cropper to any of the points listed in the install process then just let me know i'm here to help!!
You are too kind, what are you doing up at 2am still helping out old crotchety geezers like me? Cheers me 'andsome! Mark
My good grief! Is this the easy option? 5 Minute Installation There have been reports of this actually taking less than five minutes, but we're not responsible for the installation being easier than it should be. 1. Make sure your host meets the requirements. Also, have a database ready with proper username and password. 2. Unzip the package you downloaded. 3. Open up wp-config-sample.php and fill in your database details. Save and rename the file to wp-config.php. 4. Upload all the files to your webhost 5. Run the installation file. Relative to where you uploaded the files, it'll be in wp-admin/install.php. That's it! At the end of the installation it will give you a login and a random password. The password is random, so be sure to write it down or at least copy and paste it. Once you're logged in you can change the password. If you want to let others know about your new WordPress powered site, you can announce it in the forums. If you run into any problems, check out Common Installation Problems. *** Reads like gibberish to me, the magic roundabout in Swindon is easier to understand than that!
Your host needs to supprt MySQL and PHP. Assuming it does: 1. You need to create a database for WordPress to install to. Look on your admin page and look for create mysql database. Create one and supply log/pass for it. 2. Upload the wordpress directory into the root of the webserver. 3. Open the wp-config-sample.php and put in the mysql database name and the login/pass you just created. The DB_HOST would probably be something like 'mysql.blogoblin.com'. 4. Rename the file to wp-config.php and upload. 5. Run the install from your broswer: blogoblin.com/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php. Start blogging.
Thank you so much, I'll try this tomorrow, when my mind is refreshed from some sleep, been online for another 15 hours today, every day since last October the same, writing non stop so thought it about time that I put my love of wordsmithery to good use by creating a blog, so yet more information can flow in a more meaningful manner from my fingertips. Again, I really appreciate your help, thanks so much! Kindest regards. Mark
Btw, before I nod off, for those of you, especially in North America who likely are not aware of the Magic Roundabout in Swindon, there is more information about it here, which one or two of you may or may not find quite interesting, you can also find it on Youtube: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=swindon+magic+roundabout&btnG=Google+Search It's one of the most feared road junctions in the UK and there's even a wikipedia article about it. Check out the photos on that link, and always give way to traffic coming from the right, whilst driving on the left!
Ha I was up late but not up till 3:30 am like yourself!! Above is basically the basic concept on installing it. Step 1 is reffering to the Admin Page for your host, whereby it allows you to create a MYSQL database. Step 2 reffers to uploading the whole directory you downloaded untouched. If you are not aware on how to easily transfer files, this is done via an FTP program. Software like Dreamweaver allows this, or even FileZilla they both allow FTP uploading, so that you can upload the whole folder in a click to your server. Step 3 is as above, just edit the named file save it as the new name in step 4 and re-upload it!!
ok i was about to post something like this myself, but rather post a useless thread-do you mind if i jump in here? i've previously set up wordpress fine on wordpress.com before..although the whole ftp thing just annoys the crap out of me. I've bought a domain, bought hosting at hostgator, set up nameservers which have yet to be processed,so i assume the site won't be viewable by anyone except me? anyhoo that doesnt matter so much. I've used the fantastico installer to install wordpress and i can't navigate properly through the file manager. I'm using firefox, maybe thats got something to do with it? I've even tried uploading an unzipped version and try to unzip within file manager -nothing! I've already created database and edited wp-config.php I even started uploading files that i unzipped..but surely there is a quicker way than uploading a tonne of files? according to wordpress you can unzip in file manager.. I don't want to go through the tedious process of uploading dozens of files for new themes..oh and i should mention that there wasnt even a wordpress folder when i used fantastico to install wordpress.. any help is appreciated...so much for this being quick..
I'm not sure what fantastico is but it sounds like it installs wordpress for you without any problems? However as for uploading files, all you need to do is unzip the folder that you downloaded. Then click the folder and upload on your ftp folder. Then you can sit back and it will upload the whole folder for you
thanks..nevermind i've done it i think. I read further through wordpress and found some instructions of downloading ftp client called filezilla. guess i need some sleep too! it's already 1.30am!!
Its simple! With fantastico, when you install it the public html folder should be considered your wordpres folder. To upload the theme all at once, extract all the themes in one folder inside your laptop/desktop. So say you have ten themes you will have ten folders right? Select all by pressing Ctrl+A and then while keeping the ctrl button pushed, click the right mouse and when the menu pops up, select 'Send To' yourfoldername.Zip. Then upload the zip file through ftp or file manager to wp-content -> themes -> then Extract that zipped file which contains all your themes inside it. you are done. Without Fantastico, simply download the zip version of wordpress, upload it in the root folder, outside public html. You'll see a new folder named wordpress is created. Go inside that wordpress folder and tick on 'select all' through cpanel, then press 'move to', then type the address public_html/ You are done transferring! After you have transferred it, simply go to public html and you'll see everything there along with a file called wp-config-sample.php. Open it using 'Code Editor' and put your database name, database password, and database username, and finally save it. Almost done! After you have saved it, simply rename the wp-config-sample.php to wp-config.php using the rename command or using the right mouse click on its name Whew! I've written every single click you need to perform so just follow it and you'll be fine.
Arcanus - your more than welcome to jump in the thread, I don't mind in the slightest, if it helps you out, excellent! To everyone else, thank you for your kindly instructions, so many of you have hearts of gold helping other people out and taking the time to do so out of your already busy schedules and I'd like you to know, it is appreciated very much indeed! Again, a great many thanks. Thankfully, someone from Mony-Tree.com has offered to do this for me, which I know is a lazy way of going about the process, and I'll learn diddly fat squat allowing someone else the rigmarole of setting this up, but I just seem to have this uncanny knack for breaking anything to do with software uploads, it's not my forte at all, so this is likely the best thing for me to do right now, until I can get my poor old noggin around the subject at some further point in the future. It's taken me another 4 hours tonight to figure out how to upload my first video onto Youtube, something which no doubt many of you take for granted, and read something like this, and think to yourselves, 'Is this guy thick as five short planks of wood or what!' It's now bloody 4am in the morning (again). Oh to be young again, you just don't know how jealous I am of some of you guys for whom all this stuff must come, so naturally. At least hopefully the Youtube thingermejiggy wotsit whatjamacallit dooberry will work now, an hour ago I was swearing like a trooper, muttering expletives imcomprehensively under my breath, throwing my hands up in sheer exasperation and beating my chest in a great lamentation. Anyway, it's all good now. Btw, my new blog will be called: Blogoblin.com - Please look out for it when it goes online in the near future, a cantankerous and passionate writing verbosity is assured. Kindest regards to all! Mark

Getting bloody Windows Movie Maker Mark mutters under his breath to work would be a bloody (mutter, mutter) fine thing (mutter expletive mutter) too, ruddy 5:30am. Bloody computers! Cheers for the offer, I'll bear that in mind!
