cybersquatting on a .tv

So, I'm wondering if it could be a good idea to buy up .tv's of semi-popular to popular websites of those that haven't bought them up yet in order to sell the domain name to them down the line when they catch on. Of course, I'm not talking about websites where copyright infringement comes into play. For instance, I just purchased geekculture.tv. And there happens to be a semi-popular .com website of the same name. They also own all the popular dot extenstions of their website. I think websites like this that haven't done so yet will want to eventually buy the .tv extension and pay a slight premium to get them back. Any thoughts on this?

    thanks,
    Chris

nah, if they own all the others and get serious about it , they will just sue you for it. And I am sure they will win when they can show that you own all of these domain names from successful sites. Basically it will be easy for them to prove your bad intentions.

I'd avoid all of that unless you want to take a big risk.

I disagree to an extent. We aren't talking about branded sites like pepsi, etc. We are talking about rather generic terms that successful websites just happen to have as a .com etc. And when you open up new extensions for purchase there are going to be a lot of investors who buy an awful lot of domains that are already owned in their .com/.net/.org incarnations. I'm also talking about mid-size websites. Not megacorporations. If you ended up buying surfing.tv you should be allowed to without threat of being sued. The only bad intention is to make money which is why we all do this.

I agree with gentlesavage. Unless the the .com is a major trademarked brand like monster.com, etc...you should be in the clear. The other websites should have been as forward thinking as you are.
