If you're confused, its probably better to hire someone who is completely competent and learn from their doings.
Customizing any wordpress theme would require you to have atleast a bit of CSS knowledge and also a nice little knowhow on the the structure of wordpress. I have many clients who've bought themes and then ended up stranded, so it's best to ask your developer before investing in any of such "Out of the Box" themes.
Its better to take a designer if you dont know. One important thing about thesis is anyone can easily know that you are using thesis. So to be out of the box, you need to design it differently For example see targetismarket.com. It is designed on thesis and we are still working on it, we want to keep it completely different. Thesis Theme is easily to customize to a certain level. You can change colors, you can change sizes; but if you want to design an unique design, you need to hire a designer or have to have extensive CSS, HTML & PHP knowledge. Wish you all the best.
Argee with juhasan , its easy upto a point of changing colors and stuff but if you want a design to turn heads then you need a professional to do it .
Yeah, I agree with these guys. I use Thesis and love the customization options. That was why I picked it. I have done the design work myself so far. Thesis has a great selection of tutorials you can follow. I have referenced them myself when in doubt. If you are really super nervous though, or want to be really ambitious with your designing, I would say to get some assistance. Sometimes, assuming you have the money to do so and can find someone competent that you are comfortable with, it can be worse your savings in time and frustration to hire someone.
Well, as far as my knowledge is concerned, thesis comes with most features. There are really few things which need to b customized and what more, there are tons of tutes on web for such customizations which you can refer. So, better way is to give it a hit yourself. If you find it difficult, then opt for hiring anyone.
