If you cant write articles or do directories then what is there left to do? Emailing people for recip links is so 1990's and very uneffective including a huge waste of time. If they cant write content for your site and submit it to places then that is a huge disadvantage.
The issue is that we have a ton of good content, and we come up on many relevant google/yahoo searches. Our goal is to continue to improve the placement of these searches. We have submitted (and resubmitted) our articles (they show in google and yahoo for relevant key searches) and we have submitted to directories many times and we will continue to do both. However, it seems that the article-writing/directory submission works only up to a point. Now that we are placing 'ok', we want to improve these placements by producing backlinks through linking with other sites/blogs, etc.
