I would like to know which is beneficial:

    1. seperate custom error page - with message page not found and link to other web pages
    2. custom error page set as home page - in case of error home page comes

For seperate custom error page should I Add a "noindex, follow" robots tag, please suggest best practice for SEO results and best SEO practice.

i use a custom error 404 page that includes a site search form and a few links to main sections of my site to offer a visitor a second chance to find what he was actually looking for
verification of my error_logs have shown that most 404 come from direct typing a URL or from copy/paste with a space trailing the URL or similar human errors

True, that most 404 come from direct tying a url. I would like to know from SEO point do having a separate custom error page good rather than redirecting 404 to home page, how does search engine interpret this.
