Ok, so I am putting together a plan to launch a new web 2.0 diet/weightless site. I want to know what people with experience in this field think. Should I hire a programmer to create a custom CMS from scratch or just use an existing CMS, but modify it? If custom why? I want something unique to show the people and search engines. I know if custom it will take a while to debug and what not but this is where I am leaning. What are the pros and cons of custom? Looking forward to your replies. Thanks!

I would definitely go with a CMS that has a large community built around it. That is where you'll learn the fastest way rather than working on a custom solution and get stuck every time an issue pops up that beats your programming skills. I'd start with WordPress, there's so much you could learn if you go there.
