While there is definately a right way to handle critism, there's also a right way to give it in order to be taken with any hint of seriousness.

Meanwhile, concerning the fraudulent advertising...There's a reason writers should stick to writing and marketers should stick to marketing...Therefore, I take marketing advice from a writer with a grain of salt. Besides, if a writer can market well he won't find himself writing for others very much longer. :p

With that said, by no means am I pursuing a professional career in writing. However, I can write well so I am just giving my time and providing a valuable service to webmasters that need it. You know that saying: God gives you lemons you make lemonade.

I know how it feels to try to get good, relevant fresh content for your website at a decent price - it gets old quick.

I'm a marketing / PR professional, not only with a degree in the field, but running my own firm... so it was coming from a marketing professional... and a writer. ;) Writing for others can be extremely profitable (hundreds to thousands of dollars per article) if you know where to look... not too shabby if you know where to find it. ;) We post market listings daily on a few sites (check the Challenge link in my sig for some of them and links to the others), that you should check out. You might find some great markets in your niche, at least for the time being. And who knows... maybe you'll find it lucrative enough to want to make a professional career out of it in the end. :)

You're welcome. I thought it might be a worthwhile addition to the discussion. It was mortifying at the time. Ironically, it actually brought me a bit more business! :D

While I agree that great writers should look into doing their own stuff, it doesn't always mean that can't market. You have to know how to market to get to a certain level in writing. (I'm talking about 75k+)

But on the lower levels, you are 100% right. If you learn marketing and sales to some degree AND you can write well, you shouldn't be writing articles for what amounts to spare change when you could be doing so much more.

For many, it's a decision. Do I take the gigs and make my 100k a year or do I sacrifice it all and try to build something to that amount? Rarely can you do both (we're not talking about knocking off projects in an hour here).

Let's not forget, some people take on writing jobs for fun and other connectivity reasons than simply getting paid.

Yes, Jenn should have been nominated for the hottest girl of DP thread. Then I wouldn't have to be the one using my feminine charm to get blog coverage ;)

Honestly, if you aren't serious about making a professional living as a writer, that's fine. But maybe, just MAYBE, if you took the time to search out some decent markets in your niche, and took the constructive criticism of others without jumping down their throats, you could make a nice chunk of change with your hobby.

lol Nah. I couldn't have competed with the famous bikini shots this year. ;) Yet another reminder I need to get running and climbing again asap. Ugh.

Nice to see at very least this thread's gone from a rapid boil to a nice gentle simmer. lol

Shhh! Hush -- don't remind me of the bikini shots :p

I think I have to agree with you. Simmer is fine, I can deal with a gentle simmer.

lol They're going to haunt you forever. ;) When you're a famous novelist or whatever someday, you'll see your old DP bikini shots plastered in the tabloids. lol j/k

Today's been remarkably more calm than usual everywhere in the writing community. lol Need more days like this. ;)

Oh no, WHY didn't I think about that? Damn tabloids... now I can never be the female version of Stephen King. I'll have to go hide out in a cave somewhere for the rest of my life and become a hermit.

lol Yeah. How "un-scary" would that be? Could you imagine the disappointment of readers of the next great horror novel finding out it was written by some chick who lounges around in a bikini? lol ... Wait a minute. They'd probably love it. It'll be like a little gift to horror nerds everywhere. ;)

That could be marketable as well. For some people that get too scared with horror novels, you could have a bikini pic at the back so when they get scared, they turn to the pic and all's good ;)
I saw something yesterday that I thought was a really good marketing technique and similar idea. There is this comedian that is voted the sexiest comedian playing here in Toronto. Being sexy doesn't have anything to do with how funny you are but it's very marketable and probably gets a lot more people out to the shows.

It was pretty marketable, that silly contest. I got a lot of inquiries about my services from people who saw that thread.

    Oh, you are hilarious :p

While the majority of them didn't turn into clients, I was able to secure a few quality jobs out of the whole thing, at least.

aletheides, seeing that you are ignoring my PMs and IMs and seeing you have been active on the forum for the past week, I assume everyone here was right and that the attitude you displayed in this thread was an indication of the service I would get?

I ordered articles off you with a promised delivery time of December 1st. I have tried tirelessly to get in touch. Am I to assume I wasted my time then?

I am sorry I did not take everyone elses advice.
