Ok, I have a Local business directory, and use All in One SEO plugin. A question about keywords? Would generalized keywords work with Google since most people have a geo location anyway? Or would it be better to go ahead use "city+keyword" for the keyword? Thanks in advance
Target generally good keywords, but if your aim is to go after the local market for those keywords, include the region/city use google's research tool to see what works good globally, what works good closer to your target; hit both and you'll get a double whammy of SEO juice from around the world, pumping up your rankings, which will make your local listings more attractive
When I do keyword research for local businesses, I first optimize the website for the keywords that folks are actually searching. This is why keyword research is critical. Although you may not find all of the local keywords with keyword tools, common sense also prevails. I use various combinations that focuses on the niche. You will receive the added benefit of general keywords if they are already within your targeted keyword. For example: when you optimize for the keyword city+plumber, you will be optimizing for the general keyword plumber. Keep in mind that you want to ensure you get quality backlinks to each of the pages you're optimizing.
You can actually use your general keywords then add local state names on it so that you can also target local areas.
