Curious about directory submissions...

I've submitted my site to a few directories (quite a few actually), and I haven't noticed any change in traffic. My site has been approved in most of them.

    So what I'm wondering is:
Is the main point of directory submission for traffic directly from the directory itself, or for search engine listings?

I apologize in advance for not knowing, as I figure I probably should. :D

Its mainly for backlinks and serps, but not for traffic from them.
It may take some time to show you the results or may be you need to monitor your results using keyword tracker.

A few of the well promoted directories do send me a bit of traffic and have provided an excellent ROI. It will vary depending on the market you're in, some categories will naturally have more interest than others.

But I guess what I'm hinting at is don't overlook some of the paid directories just because they're fee based. ;)
