99% of them are likely search engine spiders.

Can you check the user agent (easily) with phpBB? That would tell you right away.

only 3-4 are bots, and they come once in a while. awstats doesn't show that many, i get alot of unique IPs. and yeah i can tell the user agent with the ip look up thingy. and session ids are disabled, so there's only 1 per IP.

and i dunno...i've never heard of a forum or a site being attacked by 500 spiders at the same time :p and we're only a month old. google doesn't even have us yet

If you don't use sessions it could be AOL (or any other service that uses proxies). Each request comes from a different IP.

Hmm... Well are you getting a lot of refers from real sites with real links on them? That seems like the easiest way to check. If they are legitimate users and people are not signing up... you might consider placing some additional guest only ads to help monetize things for the non-contributing traffic.

its most likely that day you got a deep crawl by one of the search engines. I had the same thing - 721 users online. Yahoo and Google both did a deep crawl at once.
