I think you need to apply to Networksolutions and the cost should be seven figures to create a new extension.

    Several seven digits.
As well as existing infrastructure to provide said service, technical support, sales activities, A&P and most importantly, a track record of managing a similar scale operation.

You'll need a minimum of $200,000 to start a registrar. You get accredited with ICANN, get your backend up and running, and start selling domains. It's a very cut throat business, and the profit margin is very slim.

I would recommend starting out as a domain reseller first.

This is a good thread, I never thought that it would be in the 7 digits to create your own domain extension - I feel bad for those that made .mobi now .

$200,000 isn't a lot of money to start a domain registrar, but as the above poster mentioned (and I agree) is that you should start out as a reseller first and see how you like the business.

Well i think this is a very complicated and demanding business you are looking for.
As for Godaddy and others, from where they are registered and getting services, the only source is ICANN. Internet corporation for assigned names and numbers. here is the address ICANN .org . you have to various types of fees and show a big running capital for getting approved by them a few examples are:

What you will pay to ICANN:

    * US$2,500 non-refundable application fee, to be submitted with application.
    * US$4,000 yearly accreditation fee due upon approval and each year thereafter.
    * Variable fee (quarterly) billed once you begin registering domain names or, the first full quarter following your accreditation approval, whichever occurs first. This fee represents a portion of ICANN's operating costs and, because it is divided among all registrars, the amount varies from quarter to quarter.
    * Transaction-based gTLD fee (quarterly). This fee is a flat fee charged for each new registration, renewal or transfer. This fee can be billed by the registrar separately on its invoice to the registrant, but is paid by the registrar to ICANN.
And many many other requirments as well.

For a start up you should start a domain reseller business so as to get an insight of business and know its pros n cons. Because i think starting a business with huge amounts of money for a newbie is not wise decision.

It's not worth it. You don't make anything on domain sales
