Is it necessary to power your blog with wordpress or other blog software?

I mean that if I want to create my own blog (not free), what languages/scripts I will have to learn so that I can manage my blog effectively without the help of a blog software?

Wordpress is a nice script, with lots of addons and open source. There is no need to spend days and days programming in order to create a less-advanced, buggy script by yourself.
There are also many other open source blogging scripts that will help you to start your blog within minutes.

if you mean "effectively" you have to learn at least PHP, MySQL, AJAX ...
So, @nimonogi said right. no need to spend lots of days to create a fully managed professional system..
People already has done that and distrubeted it freely.

    best regards.

If you want to create your blog from scratch, try to learn PHP and MySQL. Also you need to add CSS and HTML basic to make your blog layout look nice.

it seems crazy to want to start from scratch though...surely anyone even with skills would prefer to use a readily available opensource product & modify it as required?

So what are the other open source scripts for blogging besides wordpress? Both free and with some charges.

I wouldn't bother creating my own script. Wordpress is pretty good. Is there something you need that is not available in wordpress?

I think that a better route instead of building your own blogging platform.. learn XML / CSS / HTML and learn how to build custom templates to add your own flare. If you are good enough you can start selling them and make a decent buck alongside your primary business.

don't reinvent the wheel, Wordpress is an excellent opensource ready-platform to use. With a little of tweak, you can produce something unique that stand out from the crowd.

We build custom blogs all the time. It depends on what features you'd like whether it makes sense to go custom or go with something like wordpress.

Wordpress should be good. If you want you can always start with that and customize as you go, by editing the pages. That way you do not need to start from scratch but can change things as you see fit. Also I have a cool API that I would recommend taking a look at for blogs.

The hours spent coding, programming, and designing your own CMS from scratch will result in quite a bit of time wasted if you're trying to build a replica of software like WordPress. However, you can create your own content management system on a smaller scale, but PHP, MySQL, HTML, and CSS will need to become your best friends!

I love Wordpress and I strongly discourage anyone to build anything similar unless they were a true geek and wanted to optimize the code and remove any memory leaks. Wordpress is also the most popular and I hear Google loves it so it makes SEO easier.
