I've used Joomla since it's early days. it is really nice to handle, but has a lot disadvantages as well. you have to install a plugin for everything you need. I've coded a lot workarounds to get the expected result on various sites, so I know what it means to have sleepless nights with Joomla.

try the script from moodle.com. it's proven and open source

Moodle is better for managing academics. If you need business specific functionality then Joomla is bad. Wordpress is slightly better. But why not go with the best script you can get for free?
    Go with Moodle.
