Creating sites/pages using niche keywords?

I have a question. What's the basic practice of creating sites/pages/posts using niche keywords?

Is it best to create an entire site around a niche keyword?

Or is it best to have a broader subject site and create niche pages or blog posts within that site?

How do you utilize niche keywords?

I think it would be much more time consuming to create an entire site around a niche keyword.

I think it would be much easier to cover more ground by creating a broader subject site and create niche pages/posts within that site.

Can someone give me some direction in the matter?

I think it'd be perfect for SEO to do one entire site for every "bush" of related keywords (f.e. "weight loss programms", "weight loss stories", "weight loss exercises" etc.). This approach allows you to pick a "main" keyword ("weight loss") in domain and have good advertisement CTR showing super-targeted and related ads.

Ok, so lets say that the primary keyword was Baltimore. However, I'm targeting Baltimore Mountain Biking. I may in the future target Baltimore Flag Football, Baltimore Hiking Paths, etc....

I wouldn't want to create a site Baltimorerecreation

I would want to create an individual site for each specific categories.

Of course, this all depends on the competition for Baltimorerecreation and how many searches are being done for that.

I would think the broader keyword would be best if you can compete for it, correct? and then have pages for each category?

Andymisiu, I think your theory is correct. Greencoma also had a great point about perfect SEO and smaller niche sites, mainly because of the exact match domain names you can get with a highly targeted niche site.

However, I think you can get terrific SEO with a larger site, if the pages of that site have proper SEO techniques applied.
For example, if I had BaltimoreRecreation.com, I'd do subdomains like BaltimoreHikingPaths.BaltimoreRecreation.com. Every single page in that subdomain (and the main domain) must be SEO friendly. A page on the subdomain about the best hiking trails would look like BaltimoreHikingPaths.BaltimoreRecreation.com/the-best-hiking-trails .

That really helps search engines find your pages. Many webmasters use gibberish page and post names, which hurts rankings a bit.

I think the rank of the BaltimoreRecreation.com would help carry subdomains and categories within the site. That's one advantage of using a larger website. You focus on SEO for that site, and over time, the other pages will take care of themselves. They'll start popping up in search engines for phrases you'd never even thought of.
