Creating Multiple Subdomains

    Ok we have a site that we are building out that is a niche site with a massive database of 3 million records...The records are specific to each city, state and zip... Like citysearch I want to be able to have each cities content outputted to subdomains and published on our server so they are crawled....

    like if you just do a search for citysearch on google or check its index pages or even backlinks it pulls something like 53 million results and when you look at them they are all "sandiego.citysearch" or "tampa.citysearch" or "florida.citysearch" etc....

    My question is, how do I create all those sub domains automatically? they obviously didnt manually create 52 million sub domains... also there are other companies that are rather small that have done this for all 19K cities in the US and I know for sure they would never have been able to create that many...

    Please help. :confused:

    does anyone have any ideas? I cant for the life of me find any articles on how to do this....

    you can do this by create virtual subdomains using mod rewrite

    what is a virtual sub domain? Is that what citysearch is doing? and how can I fond out more about this.... we are running windows servers with sql.

    I just looked into mod rewrite and it appears to be if you have a subdomain like something.domain.com and you want the traffic to goto mydomain.com/something

    If that is the case I suppose that is fine but how do I generate a subdomain for every city (19,000 something cities) in my database without creating them manually.... so I would have the records for each city on thier own page and be indexable by search engines....

    my co-location server is using an ASP based script. with that script i can create subdomains easyly.
    sub-domain creation is only a few code.
    if you can find that kind of a script, than you modify it.
    you must get the subdomain keyword from sql and loop script till the end.
    very easy.

    would you happen to know where I could get one like yours??? we run windows, the sites in asp and dotNET and we have sql....
