Creating directories - lists of best practices

    Hi everyone!

I often consult forums to monitor the arrival of good directories, real jewelry which we are all happy to include our sites carefully. Unfortunately, the directories are rarely treated.

I suggest to members here say what they like and what they dislike in the directory, hoping that future directory companies come here to read the keys to a successful directory.

Here are what guide the creation of a directory:

    We love in directories :

    - The hard links
    - A number of lines to describe therefore
    - Can add our RSS Feed
    - Can add hard links to internal pages in the description
    - Good management category (in number and relevance)
    - Whether visitors are brought to our sites (not robots)
    - Automatic detection of title, description, of charset ...
    - Careful design
    - Quick Validation
    - The e-mails with information specific site name, URL and reason for refusal if
    - A thumbnail screenshot to illustrate the site

We do not like directories with:

    - Required reciprocal Links
    - The Nofollow!
    - The automatic validation sites (without filtering Administrator)
    - Creating a mandatory user account
    - Found dead links (consider adding a detector).
    - The illegible captchas
    - When you gotta find the button "Submit Site"
    - Validations too long
    - Policy changes over time (no link back to the top, then mandatory thereafter).
    - Unpleasant surprises after submission (reciprocal link required not announced ...).
    - The forms that disappear at the slightest error
    - Popups and other pleasant pubs
    - that is built on dropped domain (zebno) +1

    To you!

Good observations. I would add some points.

    1. Free links 'only for a year'. Whoever made that mod was really clever :D
    2. Automated approval
    3. Fake confirmation email so that we can read about the automated SEO software in their email :))
    4. Captcha text field size incorrect (surprisingly many new directories with some commonly available templates have this problem).

reciprocal Links - themselves already kill SEO benefits both for website and for directory.

I would include to bad directories:
    - Directories - clones, with the same content (even descriptions), design and server. These directories are perceived by Google as trash .. submission into them are waste of time.

To useful directories you should add directories with deep links and an extended description on the personal page of website.

P.S. You have done a good job. Thanks.

Good post - rep for you.
And when the submit button is placed next to an ad hoping for a misplaced click.

Nicely put! It's been over 3 years since I last visited Paris :) (a little nostalgia off-topic)

    Would like to add:

    1) Copied submission guidelines
    2) Directories with big AdSense block on homepage

    We like directories that:

    - Validate links every 2 weeks or monthly to check on broken links.
    - Update the PR of listed sites every PR update.

Many directories don't have it in submission form. What is the purpose? Do you want to have your latest news included in detail page of the directory?

Good information to know... Helps those of us that have them realize and recognize where improvements should be made. Keep in mind that those captcha's get more and more cryptic because the bots are getting better and better at recognizing and deciphering them.

These two here Creating a mandatory user account and illegible captchas are my biggest complaint, particularly the later. I have been unable to read the captchas on more than one directory, or unsure if it is upper/lower case or not case senistive. Very frustrating.
