Creating Custom Search Box

Quite some time ago, I created the custom search box further down page in my sig. I tried to create a new one using the latest tools they provide, but they are so convoluted, and the final result displays it as a "widget" and I don't like the look or way it integrates into the page. Is that the "standard" look? And in order to have it appear normal, I assume I need to pay for that, correct?
