Ok i thought i kind of had link building figured out, however it seems to not quite be working for my recent website. I know links arent just going to be built overnight and i do have to do more work on building links but i thought id have had more backlinks than i actually have from the work i have done so far. I have submitted one article to several article sites but only seem to have backlinks from 2 of these sites. (I know i need to submit lots more articles to see a major benefit.) I have submitted to several link directories, posted comments in a few forums with my signature included, created squidoo lenses and posted links to my articles via facebook and twitter. From all of this i only seem to have about 12 backlinks, am i just expecting too much from this or do you think i should have more from what i have done so far? Does anyone have any more ideas on how i can crate more backlinks? I'm a little confused about what social bookmarking actually is. Is this basically posting links to your site on sites like facebook, twitter and myspace etc?

Social bookmarking is essentially good for making sure your back link gets indexed not necessarily building links them self.
Firstly backlinks from link directories (especially less popular ones) take quite a while to get indexed, you might be waiting as much as a month, same thing for article directories. Secondly there are two reasons for social bookmarking (btw, none of the sites you mentioned are social bookmarking sites, those are social media sites) the first reason is to gain traffic, if your site is good then it will get recognized by the community and you will get visitors, the second reason is for the backlinks. stumbleupon is probably my favorite social bookmarking site but there are a ton out there, google it, you can also use products like onlywire to submit to them.
Few try building hundred Hundreds of dirs Gundreds of sites Etc ... Being patient is VERY Important ...
Some folks say that pinging the sites you place your link on will get these recognized faster by the search engines. In other words, if say you comment on a blog with a link back to your site, you can use a service such as Ping-o-Matic to help inform the search engine that the blog has been updated.
Ok but how many months will it take before I start ranking if I were to spend 40 hours per week on it?
Ah i see it seems i have the whole social bookmarking thing confused with social media sites. I have been on Digg and stumble upon but didnt realise this was social bookmarking. I have checked my article submissions and all of them have been accepted now. I guess i just need to give it a bit more time. I must have been lucky to get links for my other sites indexed so quickly. I shall give it more time and see what happens. All your comments so far have been very helpful and i guess it has helped others too. xtxt thanks for the offer but im not interested in purchasing anything at the minute, i want to work at it a little. Now i realise my confusion with social bookmarking i shall give it another go and see if it benefits me any further. Any other ideas, tips or tricks you guys have for me in building links and gaining traffic?
The biggest thing is to not worry as much about seeing how many links have been indexed. Some of them can take weeks to show up, others will never show up. Just keep building links and you will see your ranking go up. Get yourself some software to help, it will save you loads of time. Check out the software in my signature, ask any questions you have.
When creating a thread or even posting on a thread with your link attached in your signature does it become a stronger baclink the more posts and/or views the thread recieves? Does this even make a difference? Also if you make more than one post on a thread do your links get indexed seperatley or all as one as they are in the same thread?
Social bookmarking (wherever you get it done) basically just helps in your site getting indexed in the search engines. And also if the site is a recognized authority this might boost your rankings in the search results.

The best, dependable and great way of having backlinks is to post on various forums, and blog commenting on different pr blogs.
