So I've been looking at creating an online raffle/draw, where a user can enter by completing an offer from an affiliate company. However, I have been trying to investigate the laws etc around this, and it's not proving an easy task to find the information. What I would like to know is: 1) Since the user is completing an offer to enter into the draw, does it class as a free entry? 2) What laws will be governing me? I'm from the UK 3) Is there any limit to the value of prizes I can offer? From the gist of this, the user will go onto the site, register, select the prize they want to enter the draw for, and then following this, they are prompted with the offer to complete before their entry is accepted. *****************************88 Update *****************************88 I've just found this site http://www.out-law.com/page-6780 and it's cleared up all I need to know. As long as I offer a free entry method, then It's not classed as a lottery.
not a legal advice.. but I agree with your understanding.. as long as there is no money required to participate... "no purchase necessary".. it will not be treated as gambling which is controlled by the state and licensed. you are giving away free stuff through drawing.. nothing illegal about that.. why should there be a prize limit? it is your money.. give it away as you like it
yeah, not very clever msg to the visitors, an online lottery. i would appreciate that to skip on the future.!
Well what I was trying to say was, I wanted to create a prize draw, but if the only entry route for the user requires payment, then it is classed as a lottery, so in order to avoid laws regarding running lotteries, I can class it as a prize draw if I include at least one free route into it.
