Creating an arcade game from scratch - what software?

    Hi

    My boy wants to write his own arcade game. I figure it'll be in flash (or java applets?) but it needs to be able to program in actions for the player, baddies (or goodies, depending on the story line), levels, lives and all that stuff.

    What software are people using to do this?

    flash would be the way forward but if u want a downloaded game with full story and everything look into yoyo games game maker :)
