    Hi all,

I'm thinking of creating a video site and would like some advice on what's the best path to go creating it. I have seen grooveshark's site and a friend recommended using Flex to create sites, what are the +'s and -'s of using flex opposed to a html site+ programming, and if I don't do the youtube way, what is a good laung(s) to create a video site? I saw a couple of scripts online for $10 a script, but i'm guessing they are shit? Also would Flex be bad for SEO as it's flash? And finally how much would a programmer charge for a custom script/flex script.

    Cheers.

You would need to know actionscript. Quite frankly, if you can make all the same features as youtube, except with a much more powerful and fancier FlashVideo player, you could potentially defeat YouTube. Especially considering they are such spamware nowadays.

Well, without knowing your requirements its tough to recommend an approach. If you want to develop a video sharing community, I would use one of the many open-source or commercial scripts (ie PHPmotion, ClipBucket, ClipShare, ClipHouse, etc.). If you want to create a new offering, then PHP or .NET would be a candidate language (not many .NET video scripts at the moment, so this might provide you an untapped market to work in). Flash, its the standard for media on the web so its a must. ActionScript is not difficult to learn, so queue this up on your list of things to learn. A custom script and rates? It depends on many factors right? Plus, you will encounter the typical low ballers from you know where ... browse the freelance sites for open and closed projects that are similar to get a feel for the rates. Just a thought. Good luck!

@Tarkan: Would Flex affect my rankings/SEo as the content isn't easily indexed?

@Social.Network: cheers, just checked out PHPmotion and looks cool. What are the big differences between these open source scripts, and which one would is the best free one (in general) and commercial one, I'm not to sure which differences to look for.

    Hello MonsterC,

I am only familiar with Drupal and Dzoic Cliphouse. You can create a video sharing site with both, the main question is time. With Drupal there is a steep learning curve that takes a while, while ClipHouse is an out of box solution that you can upload to a server, configure ffmpeg and the domain and that is it.
