    I hope you're new. Otherwise I won't show you any mercy. :D

The question isn't "is it illegal to register this or that domain name?". The real
question is "why should I register this domain name?".

If your intended use is to somehow ride on someone's trademark rights (which
is one thing you should research more on your own), then yes it's potentially
illegal. Note I said "potentially", again depending on your intent if it's especially
    commercial in nature.

Yea. I'm sure a company that just spend 1.6 billion for the name and who is known for getting mad at anything even saying "Googling" in chat won't do anything. LOL ;)

Here's another one of my golden rules. Again, they aren't rocket science.

Don't put the name of a company, product or service in your domain name that you don't own.

    Watch how simple this is.

    Microsoftxxxxxxxxx.com

Do I own Microsoft? Not last time I checked my assets. Okay, I don't own Microsoft, so I can't use the name in my domain.

Follow that golden rule and you'll be fine. :)

Except for generic names which is way less restricted in terms of TM rights. :)

Care to give an example of a generic name that you can use, without infringing, in a domain name?

Don't bother. Google definately has enough money to follow this up, and they have to, in order to keep their trademark. How many youtubexxxx.com sites are there around anyway? If you have a good website, people will visit regardless of the domain.

I personally wouldn't just because of the stress involved. So you may not have recieved a letter from Google's lawyers yet, but you will eventually. And then, (if/when) you lose the domain, you will lose all your userbase and PR.

Not worth it. Just read these forums for people who have been threatened with legal action because of their domain.

The reason Google doesn't like people using Googled, googling, etc... is because if it's turned into a commonly used verb, then they stand a good chance of losing their TM through dilution. As scoxy said, they're required to go after sites to maintain their rights. Maybe not every single site, but they definitely need to show a good effort to enforce their rights, and sometimes the best defense for curtailing infringement is to make examples out of people by coming down on them with the force of a multi-billion dollar hand :)

Bingo. Google has more than a few dollars and one lawyer to handle the issue.

Are you not smart enough to come up with your own name? I bet you are!

If not (hey, some people aren't), there are companies that will help name your company/product/whatever for you. I read about one that charges $100k for company names. :)

The only reason YouTube means anything is because of branding. If you started something called PZ832 and branded it as well, it would be the same.

Wow, I'd do it for 1/100th of that :) I'm awesome at coming up with ideas and names, it's really the only thing I'm good at. Maybe I should look into starting my own business like this one :) Thanks for the idea!

Yea, I read that and about choked. Of course, it's more than just "here's your new name." There's a lot of interviewing and research (sector, target market, etc) that go into it, so it's not all profit. :)

I guess there's a decent enough market for it.

I see, thanks for all the info.

What about xxxtube.com NOT YOUTUBE just xxxTUBE.com ?

I Think that should be fine as many sites are using it.

Look up the info on USPTO.gov.

You *could* be okay as "tube" is slang for the TV and has been used for a long time.
