Can anyone give any tips on the best way to start one? Do you use a service or run one yourself? What are some of the best options out there?

Well we've used various types of news letter, I suppose it depends on your market.....

From say an online shop I would keep it smart & professional and to the point.

A website for kids - make it funny and jazzy

where as from say a forum newsletter you can be a bit more personal.

Thanks for the advice kes. I meant a bit more like how do you set on up on a website though.

You can use one of the many newsletter sites and easily place a sign up bar on your website and manage all your sign ups easily.
Some are constant contact, verticle response, aweber many more.

Are there any good free ones without ads? All those seem nice but charge a fee for them.

All those services charge for their use. I'm not sure what you mean about ads. There are no ads in your emails sent. Only what you put in them.

Verticle response I am looking into right now as they seem to not charge you for holding an account but only for the number of emails sent.
