Creating a links directory. Is it worth it?

    Hello,
I am new to these forums, and I see that a lot of you guys own and build link directories. Is it really worth it?
If I start a links directory, what will be the best method to promote it? Should I allow free links or not? How long will it be before I start profiting?

    Thanks,
    Mike

i dont think a directory is a good site to start with when you are new to the game. I would pick a very specific niche and get the hang of being a webmaster before you jump into directories.

I agree with Vigor, a directory isn't likely to be the best or the most profitable site to start out with. When you edit a directory you will be faced with a ton of spam, and people trying to get one over on you, for example by placing "reciprocal" links on pages that don't get spidered. If you run your own non-directory site for a while you will get wise to a few of these tricks. You will also eventually learn what it takes to run a decent site, and you'll get more of an eye for sorting the wheat from the chaff.

    i like that :D

I dont intend to let the masses sign up, only quality sites will be added. Also, if spamming is a problem, I will change the script so that spammers will not register.

Where will I promote the directory? Are the members of DP a large enough audience? Also, will people be willing to pay 1-2 $ for a link in a directory that does not have a descent amount content and a PR0 ?

I started a couple of directories just for fun and it was fun running them but then i sold them. You need time for them if you want it to be a good directory. You have to carefully look at everysite.

No, and no. The members of DP will want their sites listed, but you need to reach out to the non-webmaster public (unless your niche is specifically webmastering) if your listings are to be of any use to the sites that pay to be in there. You will also find that few people are willing to pay anything to be in a directory without any established listings, PR, or track record. You will need to add at least a few listings yourself, to get yourself started. And if you want to charge for links, you must be prepared to buy a few yourself.
