Holy SH*T!!! If you have so many categories why not let the user to give it? Make an input field and let the user give the category and if the editor submits the link let the category be created automatically if it does not exists. If you do not wish to make the category field user editable at least put it in alphabetic order. How can even an editor find a desired category here? When i have built an article directory i have made an input field for category keywords. Every submitter could write a line with 4 keywords or phrases comma separated. (like meta keywords) and when an editor submitted the article the PHP have split the string into keywords... there you go. No headache, no thousand record long category list. Cheers,
