I once thought about creating a social network, but it does take a little thinking on the kind of niche you want to go into as there are social networking sites on many many niches out there. One can be successful with this but the idea has to be out the box.

You can build a robust Social site using free Joomla and free Community Builder plugin or even better - JomSocial
Lot's of plugins to do almost anything. Joomla 1.6 to be released Jan10th 2011.
