Every website is meant for earning business. Say for example you are doing an seo for a shopping cart website. Now if you only get satisfied with how many visitors are landing to your site then you need to think more. As the site owner will look for the ROI(return of Investment)

So tracking how many visitors are successfully completing the shopping of products is necessary. Setting up Goal will let you know that how many visitor you have successfully converted among your total monthly visitor.

Agree with Websys_seo. Goals are the measure of ROI of our business and funnels are used to get useful information about potential customers. With reverse funnel visualization you can find your customer journey and find out where they are getting issues in your site.

Goal are very impotent, if you are doing PPC on your site you can easily analysis conversion rates and ROI.

goals and funnels are set basically for e- commerce sites.goals tells us about how many peple actually achieved our goal for example you are selling a no. of items and you want to know how many copies of a particular item you have sale. its goal that tells you.
funnel:funnels are the possible paths to achieve goals.funnels describes you the weakest part of your goal.suppose a user have to pass on from three pages and most of customer are going out from second page.its mean you should optimize your second page to achieve better goals or sales

Reverse funnel visualisation is important because as a webmaster you can see the route that the customer took to get to your goal success page. I use Goals to track enquiries - as it shows me the amount of conversions per day. Funnels, as said above only help the webmaster extract information about the visitor.

It's also useful to hard code, (or use a Wordpress Plugin) to track custom data in Analytics - it's very powerful, and can show which parts of your site are more popular, which landing pages are the best, popular visitor routes to certain pages, etc.

Analytics can provide you with a wealth of data if used correctly. I certainly wouldn't consider using other services.

    Dear,
It just show conversion for your site, like many people use your site but not interested with your service, but if some one is interested they will make a query. so to count visitor who is interested we use goal.

Funnels is just show the path form where they(interested visitor) make a query.

We set goals for the website to track user behavior to our website, once they land on our website.

there must be certain steps ( pre defined steps) in your mind which you want your users to follow and once they follow the desired steps, it is called a conversion.

By means of funnel visualization, you could check whether users are completing the funnel or the funnel is getting abandoned at certain steps. Check out at which step ( web page) users are abandoning the funnel and not completing the goal. try to fix it out by properly improving the quality of that web page.

Thus funnel could help us tracking the poorly performing webpages of the website.

Yes - I have an ecommerce site for example, and using goals I can tell what a visitor does after they add a product to their cart. For example if they are leaving on the payment screen, or shipping etc.
