    Hello People!
Im new around here and I have a big project in mind:

I will like to sell Email Accounts.
I will like to have the Free service with less options but with Ad space and a Gold or Payed version with no Ads and more Hosting Space or whatever.

What softwares should I use for the Webmail? (It has to be Open Source so I can add the Advertising)

What softwares do you recomend for the Administration?

What kind of hardware do I need? Do I need a special server?

    Thank you guys!!

If your even planning to attract some members, you need something special; so I suggest you need custom coders to get what you want, using a already made script wont get you that far (in my opinon).

And as for the server.. If your planning on competing with email competitors like Google or Yahoo you need to offer a LOT of space, so you need a BIG server if your planning to serve loads of customers.

What I would suggest though, is create a small email thing and advertise to people who need different emails to register on specific sites where free email addresses like Google Mail and Hotmail are banned, so you can get your initial members their. If you provide a good service, your paid members should grow and you can upgrade your services from their on.

    Hope it helps.

My opinion is that you won't succeed trying to create an email service to compete with Hotmail, Yahoo and GMail. Having said that, GMail was last into the game and is doing amazing. But they're an exception :p

    ive used socketmail before,

it is ok, but doesnt give the flexability you are looking for. Also, you need to release a service with a twist, why bother offering what yahoo/google/hotmail do? you wont stand a chance,

The cost for this type of service and the legal ramifications could make it not worth your while.
If you have a server and you have a power outage, or if something gets messed up, you can really be screwing up people's lives.
... Not to mention all the spam blocking equipment.
Don't forget that it is very easy for servers to crash, especially with email programs.

I would really suggest looking for a different business model.

    good luck.

You should go with your own software. Have someone create what you want. Anything that's available out there is too generic and won't get you anywhere.

Create something from the ground up!

You have to create all the basics and then something more.

My guess is about a lot. :)
