I have recently found out a much better wiglet then subscribe by email. It is called mailchimp. You can create a free newsletter and add a subscribe widget to your blog. Doesn't mailchimp allow it for free until you hit a certain number of subscribers? I have found this plugin and it is pretty awesome for free - http://www.mailpoet.com/ (WYSIJA).
