Create a blog on my own site or create a seperate site?

Should I run a blog from my main website or start a new website for my blog? Would this help for link purposes? I am thinking of going to standalone, as this would allow to blog about anything. If i blog on my own website it would have to be relevant. Just want to know what is best, I am doing it to boost my own website.

I personally go for a blog within a subfolder on my main site, but there are benifits to having a seperate blog....
'sup to you, and how/why you are using the blog.

What is the topic of your main website?

Adding a blog to your website would definitely have SEO benefits, because the frequently updated content will have the Googlebot returning to your site more often and can help your rankings.

A blog on your own site is almost always preferable to putting one on its own domain/sub-domain. It adds more content to your main site, will likely attract more links, and those links can help to build domain authority. It also allows your blog to take advantage of your main site's domain age, domain trust, domain authority. If you put it on another domain/sub-domain, the blog site will have to build its own domain age, domain trust, and domain authority

Canonical just made a really good case for starting a blog on the existing website, with a lot of specific reasons. That's my opinion as well.

Do you (or anyone) have any real reasons why a new website would be better?

Completely depends. If you "want to blog about anything" its probably better to just start a standalone blog. But just be forewarned -- people that blog without a niche topic 99.9% of the time never make money. If you're in this for the passion of writing, then great. Just wanted you to be aware of that.
